PW's 2009 Top Ten Books
I was looking at Publishers Weekly's website Sunday, and I saw something I want to pass along to you. PW has a list of Top Ten Books for 2009. They all look very interesting. I haven't read any of them. If you have, leave a post of the book title and what you thought. - JH

Next Book Quiz
Test Question
The person in the picture is:
A. Mr. Henderson in his college days
B. The inventor of the first Fuller Brush
C. Nathaniel Hawthorne, author of "The House of Seven Gables"
I don't know what DOK level this is, but if you picked anything other than C, you are beyond help!
Don't worry, however, "The House of Seven Gables" (is this the sequel to The House of Six Gables?) is our next book to read. We will meet October 8 at 3 p.m. in the Walnut Grove Library. Ms. Nettles will host this meeting, so be there or be square.

'The Time Traveler's Wife' Goes to the Movies
Have you noticed that August 14 is the relase date for "The Time Traveler's Wife"? Click on the link to see a cool preview. Our club read this last year, and it looks like a great date movie. Well, if you're still dating, that is. : )

From "Bottoms" to the Top
Well, I'm trying to be cute with our next book which is "Dreams from My Father" by Barack Obama. He's a new writer with only a couple of titles published, but I think that there are big things in store for him. He's going places!
Speaking of going places, we're talking about taking a book club field trip in the next year. Do you have any suggestions of a book that takes place near enough for us to make a road trip?
Thanks to Linda Bounds for the delicious food at our last meeting! I loved the fresh cucumbers, and the dessert was fantastic.

Don't Drink the Water
"We got out and went over to the community water pump. This was the only place you could get runing water in town, outside of the creek, and the sawmill ran dust off in that, and no telling what else. There wer also a number of outhouses along the edge of the creek, and though there were many who believed long as water moved the mess along it was all right to drink. Daddy was suspicious of such and warned me to not drink out of the creek."
from "The Bottoms" by Lansdale.
I remember canoeing down Chunky River in Lauderdale County years ago. The creek looked so clean and clear, then I saw someone's sewage pipe sticking out of the bank. I tried to not tip over!

Good Advice
"You stay away from anything to do with what the debil likes, 'cause you get in with him he'll trick on you. You hear?" from 'The Bottoms' by Lansdale.
I'm only up to page 50, but I'm relating to this story! Not that I've killed anyone - yet. But there is a lot of the Old South that I can relate to here. What about you?
